CDS recently held workshops by Joan Sheppard in Brisbane and Sydney.  Online e-learning modules are being developed, and Joan regularly conducts return visits to Australia.

Sensory approaches:

  • Evidence and strategies for using bolus characteristics to improve swallowing
  • Treating behavioral challenges and delayed development of eating skills, an integrated approach
  • Understanding and managing sudden and gradual changes in swallowing: children and adults
  • Managing complex dysphagia in the aging adult


About the Presenter

Justine Joan Sheppard Ph.D., CCC/SLP, BRS-S, Teachers College, Columbia University

Professor Justine Joan Sheppard is a Fellow of ASHA and a Board Recognised Specialist in swallowing and swallowing disorders. She teaches in the Speech Pathology course at Teachers College, Columbia University, and presents training workshops in the USA, Canada, Australia and Europe. Joan’s research interests are speech production and swallowing, dysphagia in people with disability, and acquisition of oral motor behaviours in infants and children. Her recent writing collaborations include published and in press articles on paediatric dysphagia, sensorimotor therapy, transition from tube to oral feeds at school, advanced eating skills for school-aged child, and evidence based interventions for breast and bottle feeding in the neonatal intensive care unit. Joan is in great demand as a presenter and consultant and with extensive experience in teaching and an approachable style her workshops have always been very well received here in Australia and overseas.
