Tony brings a background of 30+ years in the disability field to the Centre for Disability Studies and holds a certificate IV (Train the Trainer). He was a Foundation Student and graduated with Honours in the postgraduate program Masters of Health Science (Developmental Disability) and is currently undertaking his PhD studies looking at Active Support with families. He is involved in a number of research and teaching projects, together with a number of literature reviews and training programs. He is co-ordinator for the ‘Diploma of Disability Studies’ in Singapore, and was part of the team that introduced the first systemic review of Active Support in Australia in 2004 together with Roger Stancliffe and Keith McVilly. Tony has also been closely involved in two recent reports on Dementia by CDS. The first was an evidence-based literature review on dementia and people with intellectual disability for DADHC. This also involved the compilation of a comprehensive CD-Rom as a teaching/information module. The second was a report to the Ombudsman on dementia and Down syndrome. He is also closely involved in a pilot project to investigate how service agencies might be better prepared to support people who acquire dementia as they grow older.
His work in Active Support has also been instrumental in providing a comprehensive insight into the needs, expectations and service requirements of people and their support workers in the community across a broad age range. Active Support implementation has also necessitated Tony’s involvement with many and varied client groups, together with a close association with carers, families, service providers both NGO and Government most recently undertaking a major contract with Disability Services Queensland (DSQ) and running Active Support workshops in Taiwan and Singapore. Additionally he has good experience in conducting focus groups with families, carers and professionals. He continues to pursue a special interest in autism, transition, Active Support and community living.
